The Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Southeast Zone, has made it known that they will not conform to the ban on open grazing in the South-East

This was made known by the Chairman of MACBAN in the Southeast, Gidado Siddiki, during a public hearing on the constitution. He stated that if at all the Southeast Governors want to ban the grazing of cows openly in their States, there must be provisions for an alternative.

This statement was contained in a reply to what the former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo said concerning the ban on open grazing in Nigeria. Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, while speaking at the public hearing on the constitution, advised that all Southeast Governors should call on the State House of Assembly to pass the bill regarding the ban on open grazing into law. This is important because it is impossible to make a ban without the backing of the constitution. If the ban on open grazing has been signed into law, any perpetrator would be arrested and prosecuted.

While replying to this, the Miyetti Allah Chairman in the Southeast, Gidado Siddiki kicked against the notion. Gidado insisted that if the Governors wants to pass the ban on open grazing into law, then they should make provisions for ranching as an alternative. “How do you want us to survive if you don’t make provisions for ranching? It is like stopping a business of an individual because it goes against the law without providing him an alternative to survive”, he said.
