It is not a surprise that his Eminence, Arinze Cardinal might be the first African pope in the History of the Catholic Church.

Arinze is a native of Eziowelle, Anambra state in Nigeria. He is a convert from an African traditional religion, he was baptized in 1941 by Father Michael Tansi, who was beatified by John Paul II in 1998. His parents initially was not a Catholic. At age 15, he entered All Hallows Seminary of Onitsha from which he graduated and earned a philosophy degree in 1950. He had his theology at the Pontifical Urban University, where he ultimately earned a doctorate in sacred theology summa cum laude. On 23 November 1958, at the chapel of the university, Arinze was ordained to the priesthood by Gregorio Pietro Agagianian, pro-prefect of the Sacred Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith.

Arinze served the church for 27 years as a priest before he was made a bishop. History has it that he is among the world youngest bishops. In 1985, pope John Paul ll elevated him to the level of a cardinal.

Cardinal Arinze has written his name on a golden tablet, a confirmation to this can be seen on the fact that the Vatican and worldwide media has over the years, dubbed him “popeable” or “papabili”–meaning one worthy of the papacy. He is been nicknamed “the prince of Vatican, the prince of the church” by his fellow cardinals.

Cardinal Arinze is one of Africa’s greatest gift to the church. Many people, both the whites and Africans are of the opinion that there is the possibility of him being the pope.

What is your opinion on this?
