Nigeria Government Approves TELA Maize To Enhance Food Security

Nigeria’s quest to introduce maize varieties resistant to insects, pests, has gained approval from the federal government, with the provisions of a genetically modified corn ‘TELA’ maize, that will improve food security in the country.

The Director-General of the National Biosafety Management Agency, NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, Director-General National Biotechnology Development Agency, NABDA, Prof. Abdullahi Mustapha and the Executive Director Nigerian Institute for Agricultural Research, IAR, Professor Mohammad Ishyaku, gave their approvals during the “Public Presentation of the Drought Tolerant and Fall Armyworm Resistant Maize (TELA Maize),” in Abuja.

In his remarks, Director-General NBMA, Dr. Rufus Ebegba, said the Agency is aware of the controversies that always trail genetically modified organisms, noting that they have properly scrutinized TELA maize, to ensure human health safety.
